This May 5\u201310, Adventure for All<\/a> (AFA) brought their life-changing camp experience to Chastain Park in Atlanta \u2014 and Wahoo was honored to be part of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AFA is a non-profit dedicated to redefining human potential for all humans with exceptionalities. Their mission is simple yet powerful: create opportunities for athletes to push past perceived limitations, build confidence, and accomplish things once thought impossible. Just last year, one of their athletes completed a 100+ mile gravel bike race, achieving a milestone many never imagined possible \u2014 and this year, Atlanta gets to witness more stories like that unfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why at AFA They Say “Exceptionality”<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe believe language holds incredible power. The words we choose shape identities, perceptions, and ultimately, possibilities,\u201d Chase Pettey, Founder of Adventure for All, said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve made a conscious decision to use the word \u2018exceptionality\u2019<\/strong> rather than \u2018disability.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u2018disability\u2019, by its very definition, centers on limitation. Whether we mean to or not, when we hear it, the brain connects it to \u2018not able.\u2019 It subtly reinforces a belief system that someone is less than<\/em>, incapable<\/em>, or somehow outside the bounds of potential<\/em>. That language carries weight. And too often, it\u2019s that first label \u2013spoken or unspoken \u2013that becomes the barrier before any real connection, opportunity, or belief can take root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when we say \u2018exceptionality,\u2019<\/strong> we\u2019re framing identity through a lens of capability<\/em>, curiosity<\/em>, and value<\/em>. The word itself means \u2018unusually good\u2019 or \u2018outstanding.\u2019 It opens the door for deeper reflection, more honest questions, and a complete shift in how someone is seen. And isn\u2019t that what we all want? To be seen fully. Not for what we lack \u2014 but for what makes us incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also intentionally avoid phrases like \u2018special needs.\u2019 Because we don\u2019t believe the fundamental needs of these individuals are special at all. They\u2019re human. The need to belong. To be loved. To be challenged. To be seen, believed in, and given choice. These are universal. The pathways might look different, but the heart of it is the same for all of us. So when we say exceptionality<\/strong>, we\u2019re not ignoring the reality of challenges. We\u2019re refusing to let them define the entire<\/em> story. Because we don\u2019t believe in minimizing a person to what they can\u2019t<\/em> do. We believe in reflecting back who they truly are: exceptional.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
