The Connected Man: Cool Gear to use with your Wahoo Fitness Products
By Christian
11/14/2011 1:24:00 PM
Even before my days at Wahoo Fitness, I have always had this desire to own the newest, coolest toy, sporting good, electronic gadget, gear, etc.  Technology moves quickly and everything keeps getting lighter, faster & better!!

How did I become a connected man you ask? I look back at the emergence of 2 things in my life: Best Buy and Maxim Magazine.  Crazy, huh?  Best Buy is pretty easy to understand.  Every Sunday when I picked up my paper I would immediately scan through the advertisements and look for the Best Buy Weekly Shopper Guide.  It usually has all the best electronic products and if you combine that with a NO INTEREST offer you usually have me hook, line & sinker!  Can you say Playstation3, iPhone, Ipad2, MacBook Pro? Well, I can.  If you think back to the early days of Maxim Magazine, they used to run a header that said "Games, Gear, Gadgets, Girls." Well, at least I think they said "Girls."  Maybe it was Babes?  Anyhow, those were 4 things I remember the most about the magazine.  All of the latest and coolest toys/electronics, clothes I couldn't afford, and women I could never get!

Let's fast forward some 20 years (and please note that I no longer subscribe to Maxim Magazine!)  I now work for Wahoo Fitness, where we're contstantly coming up with the coolest technology to help you track you fitness training.  I use the bike pack on all of my rides and people are always asking me about it when they see it on my bike. I still lust after the newest electronic gadgets, love cool gear for athletics, still play video games and definitely enjoy reviewing the Top 100 Maxim Girls (who doesn't?) And I'm part consumer, part evangelist.  I probably tell up to 100 people about the coolest thing I just bought!  So I thought I'd tell you all about the coolest gear I'm currently using.

Recommendations for Cool Gear to use with Wahoo Fitness
My recommendations for cool gear to use with your Wahoo Fitness Bike Pack or Run/Gym Pack:

Check out the Jaybird wireless bluetooth earphones. These babies are great for delivering a strong bass and retail for somewhere around $99.  I picked these up at Interbike 2011, but you can visit their website to learn more about them and order yourself a pair.

I don't know about you, but I plan on doing a lot of indoor training this winter so I can peak in time for the Rev3 Triathlon in TN.  Lucky for me I have the Sea Sucker iPad Mounting System to secure my iPad2.  Plug in the Wahoo Fitness Key and you transform your iPad 2 into the perfect indoor trainer.

If you'd rather ride/run outside this winter you need to be concerned about safety. People need to see you or something bad might happen.  Pick yourself up the Blackburn Flea and be sure to get the Flea Head mount for you ball cap. It fits on the end of your hat and lights up the road and also allows you to peak down at your iPhone and your Wahoo Fitness App to see how far/fast your going.

So those are my recommendations for the coolest gear & gadgets that work great with Wahoo Fitness products.  Oh and by the way, you can pick up your Wahoo Run/Gym Pack at your local Best Buy -- opt for the No Interest Plan if they offer!

Why we love ANT (the wireless technology, not the insect)
By Molly
10/13/2011 8:51:00 AM

How do we love ANT+?  Let us count the ways...

As you know by now, Wahoo Fitness’s mission is to connect smart phones with fitness sensors—making the technology seamless so you get all the data you want without out the wires, charging up, plugging in, clipping on, etc.   And we couldn’t do what we do best without our friends over at ANT+.

So what is ANT+?  It’s a super efficient wireless technology that’s used in many fitness, wellness and home health applications.  In fact, many existing fitness sensors, like heart rate monitors and bike speed and cadence sensors, already use this technology.  ANT+ allows these sensors to send your fitness data wirelessly to any ANT+ receiver so you can see and track your fitness stats.

For example, if you run with a Timex heart rate watch, your heart rate monitor measures how many beats per minute (BPM) your heart is beating, depending on how much energy you’re exerting, and then sends that data via ANT+ to the receiver in your watch, where your BPM is displayed.

Well, often those ANT+ receiver devices are expensive and only work for specific functions (ie JUST read heart rate).  That’s where Wahoo comes in.  Our Wahoo Key for iPhone and Bike Case for iPhone add an ANT+ transceiver to your iPhone, which allows your phone to receive and display all the data sent from any ANT+ sensor.   It’s the magic behind what we do.

Why we love ANT+ (and why you should too!)

  • Since Wahoo products run on ANT+ technology, you can use most fitness sensors currently on the market with our products.  So if, for example, you already own a Garmin heart rate monitor, you don’t have to buy a different one to use with our Key or Case.  The technology is the same and it will work seamlessly.  (We still like our sensors best, but we play nice so you can benefit!)
  • It supports multiple sensors at once so you can run with a heart rate monitor AND a foot pod or ride with a speed and cadence senor AND a power meter.  Actually, it can run up to 8 sensors at a time, which is way more than you’d probably ever need, but a neat fun fact nonetheless.
  • It’s engineered for efficiency.  As their website explains, ANT+ has “been designed to simplify network development and optimize network operational efficiency.” Obviously.  What that means in English is that ANT+ devices can run for years on a simple coin cell battery, compared to days or months other wireless technologies would last.
  • Our products feature an ANT+ transceiver, which means they can send AND receive data.  Most often you’ll want them to receive data (info from your heart rate monitor, speed and cadence sensor, etc.), but they can also send data.  Want to calibrate your Quarq power meter?  Your Wahoo Bike Case or Wahoo Key can send all the data to your power meter needs to make it uber-accurate.

So thanks ANT+.  We think you’re great.
